It never ceases to amaze us how these potcakes survive... They are the most gentle of dogs but they are so impressively hardy. They survive so much in their hard lives in the wild. From lack of food and water, to hardship, tough climate, abuse, disease and neglect. Then they turn around and just are the most forgiving and loving family pets. One of our most beloved volunteers has been going daily to an area on The Island to feed and care for a local mans dogs. He was sadly killed and his dogs were left to fend for themselves. Whilst caring for these forgotten dogs, she came across another very friendly but shy dog that she came to call Molly. A few weeks later this volunteer discovered that Molly had given birth. Barely able to care for herself, Molly was now in charge of feeding puppies. Our volunteer diligently brought food to these dogs but could not control who ate what. As the days went by, we managed to place some of the dogs on Island. Molly one day disappeared. Our volunteer was frantic and searched for her, but she could not be found. Fearing the worst, she resigned herself to the fact that Molly was just not strong enough to carry on the fight for life. A few weeks went by when one day another Potcake Place volunteer spotted a very emaciated Molly along the side of the road. She tried to follow her, but lost her in the bushes. Later that day after it had cooled down the search was on to try and find her. It was thought that her pups had all died weeks before. but then to her utter shock and great joy our volunteer found Molly in the bush by the dusty roadside and eight big chunky puppies! Worried about how she was going to get Molly to come with her she called another volunteer for help. But as she sat down on the side of that road with cars racing by her, Molly just lay by her side and waited. She actually allowed our volunteer to pick her up and put her in the back of her car, followed by her babies.
Molly and family are now safe in foster care and appear to be thriving. It amazes us to think of Molly weak with hunger being able to move all eight of her babies across a busy road to what she believed would be a safer spot for them. She truly is Molly the Miracle and our devoted volunteer truly is a marvelous lady.
UPDATE: Tess is now in her forever home in New Jersey. She has a big brother Lab to show her all the tricks!
